RAVOTRIL

PERFORMANCE RAVOTRIL / CHILE ART TRIENNAL from Prem Sarjo on Vimeo.

RAVOTRIL (In English)

The Performance

On the 5th of October 2009 Prem Sarjo self-ingested an overdose of 15 mg of RAVOTRIL just before the opening ceremony of the first Chilean Art Triennial at the Museum of Fine Arts in Santiago. When president Michelle Bachelet had finished her speech she came down from the stage to mingle with the audience and the artist collapsed completely unconscious in front of her. A woman, pulling him by the arms, dragged him out of the place, along the main hall towards the exit. She later rolled him down the steps. She kept dragging him, now from the legs, down to the sidewalk of José Miguel de la Barra up to the edge of the street. Then she looked for a taxi cab but instead was arrested by the local police, who were following instructions from the presidential chief bodyguard. Sarjo’s body remained slumped in front of the museum, until later when an ambulance left no trace of him at the scene. In his t-shirt one could read the word RAVOTRIL spelt backwards.

The Triennial

The new Chilean Triennial announced its premiere well in advance. This gave plenty of room for a flood of controversy. Amongst them, Eugenio Dittborn’s resignation, who was going to be the honoree of the event. The acclaimed artist was quoted saying that he feared that what had begun as a homage would end up being a nightmare. In spite of Dittborn’s discretion on the subject he spoke of the lack of organization and professionalism of a Triennal entrusted on people with insufficient training.

Carlos Leppe, another renowned visual artist, though somehow more irreverent than the latter, was also obliged to withdraw before it became too late. After the unexpected rejection of a piece proposed by him - placing a huge rock in the main hall of the museum - the curators asked him to exhibit a work he had already shown from the eighties. It may not suffice to say that these kind of attitudes do nothing but kill the artist and the national culture, both condemned to become slaves of the past.

The Triennial considered itself within the context of contemporary art, but there was never an open call for works. From one moment to the other all the curators and artists had made a choice between themselves. Since 1990 Chile is no longer a dictatorship but it’s attitude towards the arts remains the same. Works perpetuate themselves based on the relationships of closed and rotten groups. Is this Triennial plainly ignorant or is it just trying to be too smart? Does it think that all artists, for the mere fact of being alive, create contemporary art or does it scratch the back of those who may grant special privileges? Any of these contributed to the international discredit of the country, forcing it to show itself as a place where nothing interesting is happening within the visual arts. Paradoxically, the main discourse of this Triennial was the problems encountered between contemporary arts and the institutions that support it.

Psychotropic

Every year Chile is among the main consumers of psychiatric tranquilizers, RAVOTRIL being the most popular of all. That is why it has become the darling of pharmacies and physicians, bound together in a very promising enterprise. It is not difficult to keep the population anesthetized, for there a few capable of bearing this reality without the use of some kind of drug. Children, teenagers, women of all ages (including pregnant and nursing mothers), men and old aged have access to prescriptions for RAVOTRIL because they suffer from disorders such as panic attacks, insomnia, unfathomable anxieties which are thus repressed. Of course it is the economically privileged who allow themselves the luxury of being drugged within legality. The rest just have to cope the best they can. Due to the social abysses present in a small city like Santiago there is a profusely elaborate black market to meet the needs of the hopeless, where they can get this drug at affordable prices but under the risk of being arrested.

The main component present in RAVOTRIL is Clonazepam. At first it was administered as an anticonvulsant but now it is used for the most diverse psychological disorders. This medicine produces addiction within the first two weeks of consumption, stimulating adverse effects such as depression, irritability, weariness, dizziness, coordination problems, loss of cognitive functions (those addicted to RAVOTRIL have trouble remembering their dreams), tiredness, nervousness, different behavioral alterations, amnesia, weakness and sight loss, to name but a few. Psychiatry is a newborn science and each patient’s brain is remarkably unique. That is why many other disorders are being reported but do not see the light of day. For there are means for pharmacological information, such as Ahumada’s Pharmacies website, who prefer not to handle this kind of data when describing such medicine. On it’s leaflet one can read: “If you or someone else has had an overdose of RAVOTRIL you should immediately contact your physician or head to the nearest medical centre”. But after a little research it becomes impossible to trust one’s life on those responsible for the growing pharmacological dependency of the Chilean population.

Reaction

The inaugural speech for the 2009 Chilean Triennial spoke of opening up spaces for contemporary arts, but the Museum of Fine Arts kicked off with an exhibition entitled State Territories. Landscape and Cartography. Chile, 19th Century. One could see paintings from that period portraying a contemplative look at Chilean nature. It was within this context that the contemporary artist Sarjo struck the institutions with the work RAVOTRIL.

Once the artist had collapsed many genuine reactions from the attending public exposed their true nature, rendering them individuals. The effect that RAVOTRIL caused on Paulina Urrutia, minister of culture, was undoubtedly a very interesting one. The president Michelle Bachelet instinctively wanted to help the man who had fallen a few centimeters away from her. She had no time to do this because Urrutia took her by the arm, as if she was a little girl in need to be taught. Meanwhile she kept repeating “it’s just theatre”, taking her to the side in order to resume with the protocol and greetings, blocking her vision on what was happening. Surprisingly enough, this expert on dramatic arts was wrong. Theatre presupposes acting, and this performance was a real experience that was taking place. There was no theatre.

While the body was being dragged out of the venue, some of the attendants commented quite naturally on the performance. Others, more disconcerted, yelled hysterically to make way for the fainted man. Press photographers packing the place, concentrated on the scene, following it closely, lighting it up with their uninterrupted flashes. The guards standing at the exit opened the door for the woman who was dragging the body under the gaze of the Museum’s Director Milan Ivelic - not a helping gaze but rather one looking for the swift disappearance of this uncomfortable irruption, making everything return back to normal.

Once you reach the street the state acts as a repression mechanism. The police came closer without knowing what to do. It was the presidential chief bodyguard who took the initiative, ordering to handcuff the woman and an ambulance to take away as fast as possible the body of the man who by now was scarcely breathing. The press and curious, who followed the work almost until the end, were also forced to disappear. Supposedly there was nothing there to see. Nonetheless, there lay the unconscious man, tarnishing the Museum’s luminous façade, his arms wide open, his body beaten and bruised as if scars from his dragged path. Time moved slowly as the curious onlookers in their cars and pedestrians moved along under the furious pressure from the police, until the ambulance arrived.

Sarjo was battered before arriving at the emergency medical centre. After being relocated at a different hospital he arrived at the police station, where he was interrogated and investigated. He has charged with public disturbances. The main reason for suspicion for those responsible of the city’s security was the fact that the president was present when RAVOTRIL took place. Any public disturbance in front of the presidential figure is considered a menace and a threat to the state. It is in these cases that the law applies its full force. All this censorship contributes to impose something quite simple: to hide the real panorama to the one person who should be aware of everything that is going on around her.

What can’t be seen

One of the many issues the curator Tricio Escobar set out to tackle in the 2009 Chilean Triennial was “...the political debate on the indigenous matter, Moreover, a concern for the intersection of indigenous, popular and contemporary art”. In the southern part of the country a series of transnational corporations and Chilean multimillionaires usurp the lands which have belonged to Mapuche families long before the spanish conquest. This system is always sustained through violence. The police, paid for by the government, enter triumphantly armed to the teeth. Many of the indigenous people have decided to create peaceful defense barriers, sitting silently in line, protecting what belongs to them. Others, willing to do anything to avoid becoming beggars or being turned into slaves, fight with their bodies until death. Both of them are battered and, once they’ve become defenseless, are dragged by the arms or legs until they have disappeared from the scene. There is a sinister resemblance between this image and the RAVOTRIL performance.

While Sarjo’s life hangs by a thread, he is removed as a garbage bag from a place where he is not wanted. The performance works as a metaphor of these institutions through the body, it’s support. The artist responds to the cultural medium in his country as Dittborn or Leppe, but through a work of art. The reaction to his performance only evidences that it is impossible to make real art within the bounds of these institutions. Sadly, Chile is yet unfit for a contemporary art Triennial. Around the world, Biennials and Triennials absorb manifestations actually more controversial than this as part of the production of what is being called for, because we understand that it is within these spaces that the artists have the responsibility to express themselves, particularly if it is in opposition. Nonetheless, if experiences like these are needed to unveil the machinery of an oppressive system, they are more than welcome.

Prem Sarjo’s work has been blatantly censured and eliminated from the local media. It was no surprise for him that the performance was silenced. The following day, newspapers and television newsreels were adorned with solemn reports on the peaceful opening event of the 2009 Chilean Triennial. There was no hint of the unexpected situation that took place. All the films from the reporters at the scene were omitted under an invisible decision. Bits and pieces of reality were forever excluded, same as the president being dragged by the arm by a minister of culture who could not consume the only contemporary art manifestation that was happening. Under a cloud of RAVOTRIL, individuals become mass. On top of this cloud, a few laugh heartily and fill their pockets with the ambition of the presidency of a country which is so easily manipulated. The strike of this performance, superficially violent, should be read as a declaration of love. It’s love towards art, surpassing the lover, until he gives his life for it. But above all, what prevails in RAVOTRIL, and which might even be unknown for the artist, is the love for his country. A sleeping country which hides in its forgotten dreams the power to wake up.
